The Hotel Espana originally opened its doors in 1859 under the name Fonda de Espana, and was later renovated by the celebrated modernist architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner in the early twentieth century. The work was deservedly recognised by Barcelona City Council in 1904, it was awarded with a Diploma of Honour for "best establishment decorated in the artistic-ornamental style", and has therefore always been considered a jewel in the crown of Catalonian modernism in the city of Barcelona. Hotel Espana's 2010 renovation project has recaptured the spirit that Domenech i Montaner conceived for the hotel. The hotel's modernist spaces have been restored to their original design, while, at the same time, installing the latest in technology, design and comfort.

The restaurant Fond Espana is located in the Modernist dining room originally designed and decorated by Domenech i Montaner. The renown chef Martin Berasategui aims to bring his culinary style to a wider audience with simple, balanced and mouth-watering creations. Fonda Espana offers traditional cuisine that has been brought up to date, is presented imaginatively and uses the best ingredients available.

A total of 82 spacious and quiet rooms that have been carefully decorated in a very contemporary and timeless style to provide a feeling of elegance and comfort. There are 50 Standard, 28 Deluxe and three Executive rooms, and one suite. Standard rooms are completed with independent air conditioning, 32 flat screen television with international channels, Wi Fi and Ipod dock, large desk, safe, free minibar, individual reading lamps and full bathroom with an exclusive welcome pack and full length mirror. Decoration combine modern interior design with the classicism of a nineteenth century building.
